I have to say, there is something wonderful about manhandling a contact sheet. Not in a tear it up and throw it away sense, but rather knowing this is the only process between loading a film back and processing and printing a final perfect image that one needn’t worry too much about spilling a cup of tea over.
So with that in mind, I love adding dots and stars and scratching around with marker pens. It’s the photographic equivalent of what doodling is to a painter and taking notes is to a writer. Whatever it is, looking back at them now they have taken on a new life of their own; the scratches and dust adding to the design. My favourite is the stars, the gold ones.
